Premenstrual
Syndrome (PMS)
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) - sometimes
referred to as PMT or Premenstrual Tension), is a number of
physical, psychological, and emotional symptoms associated with
a woman's menstrual cycle.
These premenstrual syndrome symptoms
include:
-
Abdominal bloating
-
Breast tenderness
-
Headaches
-
Fatigue
-
Mood swings
-
Anxiety
-
Depression
The symptoms of premenstrual syndrome
usually occur between 2 to 7 days before the start of
menstruation and disappear shortly after the period begins.
PMS was originally seen as purely imagined
disease, despite the severe symptoms shared by so many
women.
For many women suffering from PMS, these
symptoms become so severe that normal day to day activities are
virtually impossible.
Genetic disposition is often a good
predictor of the possibility of premenstrual syndrome. Some
studies suggest that PMS is twice as possible to be present in
identical twins for example.
Women suffering from PMS have an increased
risk of developing clinical depression - resulting from the
severe mood swings they face during their PMS. Most women find
the physical symptoms of PMS more tolerable than their
emotional symptoms.
A more severe form of premenstrual syndrome
is Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD. PMDD is considered to
be so severe it interferes with normal social function and
interaction.
Women between the ages of 30-45 often
experience more severe symptoms of PMS. Premenstrual
syndrome is a generally stable occurrence, with women suffering
PMS experiencing the same symptoms during their cycle for a
number of years.
